Process: paper sketch, canvas sketch, painted pillow
|
The Process:
I begin each pillow with an original drawing.
Once my initial proportions are defined I
transfer this paper sketch onto raw, washed
canvas.
Next I paint. I apply several layers of fabric
pigments. I layer color through washes and
stains and slowly build to precise details.
Once the canvas image is dry I select a trim to
match (twisted bullion, tassels, fringe etc) and
baste this onto the painted canvas. In
essence I make a textile frame.
Next a backing for the pillow is selected. I
usually apply 100% cotton velvet because I
like the way it feels. I add a zipper, sew it all
together and insert a pillow form.
The pillow format is among my favorites
because you are supposed to hold it, hug it
caress it and rest your head. You can run
your fingers over the painted strokes and
contemplate for yourself a feather or a fin.
